Furry feline friends

Charles Dickens once asked: “What greater gift than the love of a cat?” And today we celebrate the love of all cats on International Cat Day.

Kitty cat

Expect to see a lot of cats filling up your social media accounts, proud cat owners showing off pictures of their little moggy and cute videos doing the rounds.

As much as we all love a cat video, today is not only for celebrating the UK’s second favourite pet – International Cat Day also raises awareness of cat adoption.

Cat awareness

The annual celebration was started in 2002 by the International Fund for Animal Welfare (IFWA) and other animal welfare groups. Annually, August 8 marks awareness of proper cat care. Around the world there are cats living in shelters waiting for their forever homes that need someone like you to take care of them.

Of course everyone loves kittens but older cats need attention too. Many UK animal charities have cats of all ages waiting to be adopted and become a member of a family. Making excellent pets, cats are extremely independent and can look after themselves – all they ask for is a lot of love and affection.
