Fun in the sun: Summer getaways

Great for a romantic weekend away with your partner, or a solo trip, these destinations will ensure you get your fix of sun, sightseeing and stress-free travel. Pack your bags because there’s some TLC waiting at the airport this Easter.

Beach ready

Fly to the sunny Balearic Islands for just £41 return from Prestwick Airport with Ryanair.

Mallorca has over 200 beaches to choose from, so there’s nowhere better to head if you want a relaxing beach trip, or to try your hand at watersports. Kayak, paddleboard and windsurf along the bright blue waves, without the fear of falling into freezing cold water.

Then take advantage of the natural surroundings away from the water and go hillwalking, or if you want a real thrill, try your hand at rock climbing. If adventure’s not your style, take a romantic boat trip and watch the sun set, or relax on a beach chair with a piña colada in one hand, and a book in the other.

Weekend away

For a romantic weekend away, Rome is top of the list.

Stroll down the cobbled streets of the Italian capital, and explore everything Rome has to offer (flights start at £80 with Ryanair). Make a wish at the Trevi Fountain, soak up some history at the Colosseum, and pay a visit to the Vatican City for a glimpse of the Pope.

Of course, no trip to Italy is complete without pizza for lunch and pasta for tea every night. Sure, you can do that at home, but it’s much more fun doing it on holiday. Rome wasn’t built in a day, but you’ll have fallen in love with it after just a weekend away.

Set sail with Barrhead Travel

The new MSC Bellissima offers numerous amenities for couples who are looking for a relaxing getaway. During the day you can relax in the MSC Aurea Spa, a luxurious Balinese spa with thermal area, beauty salon and nail boutique. Then at night, sit down to dinner while enjoying an exclusive show from the world-famous Cirque du Soleil, in the purpose-built Carousel Lounge.

The MSC Bellissima is currently home ported in Genoa, and offers delightful itineraries around Spain, France and Italy. If you book through Barrhead Travel you can also add-on exclusive flights from Glasgow to Genoa with British Airways, that can’t be booked elsewhere.

City break bliss

For a longer venture abroad, why not head to Portugal’s sunny capital, Lisbon? You can fly there for just £82 from Edinburgh with Ryanair.

Take a ride on the iconic trams to get an authentic view of the city. Catch the number 28 for the most famous and scenic route though the city. We’d recommend getting on at Campo Ourique, for a shorter queue and better chance of getting a seat.

Climb up to Castelo de Sao Jorge for breath-taking views of the city, or wander through the winding streets to admire the street art. Spend the evening in a café while you try Lisbon’s pride and joy: pastéis de nata, or custard tarts to us.
